Configure Windows Server 2003 for XP Look and Feel

Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP share the same code base. However, Server 2003 comes with a slightly different look and feel due to different default settings. It’s quite easy to change the settings of Windows Server 2003 to make it look and feel just like Windows XP. Just follow these simple steps:

Configuring the “Look”

   1. First Log In as Administrator:

   2. Disable “Manage Your Server” Pop-up: just check “Don’t display this again”

   3. Enable XP “Look” (Themes): By default Windows Server 2003 hides the Windows XP “Luna” look from the Display Properties. You just need to enable the Themes service to make this option appear in Display Properties. To do this: Click Start > Run > and type services.msc & Enter. Look for the Themes service > double click it > set the Startup dropdown to Automatic > Press Apply > Now you can press Start > Click OK. Themes are now enabled and you can right click on the desktop, select Properties > Themes > Windows XP.

    4. Quick Launch for Windows Media Player 10: Windows Media Player is shipped with Windows Server 2003 but its hidden away in the Start menu, to enable Media Player Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Windows Media Player. You will be presented with the Welcome to Windows Media Player screen. On the same screen that lists “File Types” to be played by the media player, don't forget to use the More Options tab and click to add a Quick Launch icon so you can access Media Player directly from the Quick Launch area. Click Finish.

    5. Perform Add/Remove Windows Components: The Windows Server 2003 default install leaves out some components needed for a Windows XP “look.” You get to these by going to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components which launches the “Windows Components Wizard” and then scrolling down to get to the needed component(s). _ Add Accessories to the system: By default, Windows Server 2003 does not install the common Windows XP accessories such as Paint, Calculator, Word Pad, and Character Map. In the launched “Windows Components Wizard,” “Accessories and Utilities” will be the first component listed. Click the “Details …” button on that window, and when the “Subcomponents of Accessories and Utilities” window pops up, check the box next to “Accessories.” _ Disable Internet Explorer Hardening: The security features in Windows Server 2003 sets Internet Explorer to high security by default, so you won't be able to browse any sites. Remove Internet Explorer's Enhanced Security Configuration, using the “Add/Remove Windows Components” Wizard and scroll down to the “Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration” item. Click on Details and uncheck both boxes.

With these optional components now checked and unchecked, click “OK” and “Next>” and the “Windows Components Wizard” then prompts you through the install and uninstall using your Windows Server 2003 installation media.

Configuring the “Feel”

1. Set the Internet Explorer homepage. Now when you start Internet Explorer, you’ll see a notice that says IE Enhanced Security Configuration is not enabled. Simply change the homepage in Internet Explorer's options (>Tools>Internet Options>Home Page). If desired, you can custom configure your security settings by going to Tools > Internet Options > Security Tab > Custom Level.

2. Enable Hardware Acceleration: By default, Windows Server 2003 has most hardware acceleration disabled for graphics cards, which means some 2D and 3D capabilities may be limited. To change this, right click on the desktop > Select "Properties" > Select "Settings" tab > Click "Advanced" > Select "Troubleshoot" tab and move the Hardware Acceleration slider all the way to "Full" > Click OK > OK

3. Enable DirectX: DirectX (8.1) DirectDraw, Direct3D and AGP Texture Acceleration may also be disabled by default on Windows Server 2003. To enable click start > Run > Type dxdiag & enter >. In the dxdiag application window, click on the Display tab > then click the Enable buttons on all  Acceleration options that are not grayed out > Click Exit.

4. Configure Processor Scheduling and disable Error Reporting: Right click My Computer > Select Properties > Select Advanced tab > Click first Settings button for Performance > and select the Advanced tab. Default options are set for Processor scheduling to Background Services and Memory

usage is limited to System Cache. Change Processor scheduling to Programs > Change Memory usage to Programs > Click OK > While still on the Advanced tab you can also choose to disable Error Reporting. To do this click Error Reporting in the Startup and Recovery section of the Advanced tab and set to Disable error reporting (be sure that the "But notify me when critical errors occur" is checked) Click OK > OK.
